Fix Your Broken Fridge With These Tips
Your home's fridge is something you might take for granted over time. You just expect it to work and keep your food chilled or frozen. So when something goes wrong, it could potentially mess up your entire daily routine. If you believe you have a fridge that is broken or just not operating the way it should, here are some tips to fix common fridge problems.
Clean the Coils
Is your fridge cycling or constantly running but never quite hitting the right temperature? Your fridge's coils do the bulk of the work of keeping the food cold. If the coils are dirty or don't have proper airflow, you are going to quickly develop a problem. Unplug the fridge, pull it away from the wall and remove all dust or debris from the coils. If the coils are located behind the fridge, make sure you aren't pushing the coils right up against the wall.
Check for Clogs
You walked into your kitchen to grab a drink from the fridge but noticed water on the floor. If your fridge has a leak, you likely have a clog in one of two areas. The defrost drain needs to be clear for water to drain properly. If you have a water supply line coming into the fridge, this is another area that could become clogged. Clean all drains or tubes of debris and see if that fixes the problem.
Check the Seal
If the coils are clean but you sense that the fridge is still struggling to keep food at the right temperature, check the seals on the fridge and freezer doors. A fridge with a bad seal is going to leak chilled air and will have to continue cycling in order to replace the cold air it is constantly losing. Wipe down all seals on your fridge or freezer on a regular basis and make sure they are dry in order to ensure a good seal at all times.
Clean or Replace the Fans
It takes more than just the coils to keep your fridge cold. Your fridge likely also has a condenser fan and an evaporator fan. These areas can also get dirty or accumulate debris. If you notice the fans are getting louder than normal, unplug the fridge and disassemble until you get to the fans to see if there is anything you can clean up.
